"Μετέθηκέ τε οὖν οὕτω αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πρόσθεν καὶ διὰ τούτων τὴν γένεσιν ἐν ἀλλήλοις ἐποίησε, διὰ τοῦἄρρενος ἐν τῷ θήλει, τῶνδε ἕνεκα, ἵνα ἐν τῇ συμπλοκῇ ἅμα μὲν εἰ ἀνὴρ γυναικὶ ἐντύχοι, γεννῷεν καὶίγνοιτο τὸ γένος, ἅμα δ εἰ καὶ ἄρρην ἄρρενι, πλησμονὴν γοῦν γίγνοιτο τῆς συνουσίας καὶ διαπαύοιντο καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἔργα τρέποιντο καὶ τοῦ ἄλλου βίου ἐπιμελοῖντο. ἔστι δὴ οὖν ἐκ τόσου ὁ ἔρως ἔμφυτος ἀλλήλων τοῖς ἀνθρώποις καὶ τῆς ἀρχαίας φύσεως συναγωγεὺς καὶ ἐπιχειρῶν ποιῆσαι ἓν ἐκ δυοῖν καὶἰάσασθαι τὴν φύσιν τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην. ὅσοι δὲ ἄρρενος τμῆμά εἰσι, τὰ ἄρρενα διώκουσι, καὶ τέως μὲν ἂν παῖδες ὦσιν, ἅτε τεμάχια ὄντα τοῦ ἄρρενος, φιλοῦσι τοὺς ἄνδρας καὶ χαίρουσι συγκατακείμενοι καὶένοι τοῖς ἀνδράσι, καί εἰσιν οὗτοι βέλτιστοι τῶν παίδων καὶ μειρακίων, ἅτε ἀνδρειότατοι ὄντες φύσει"

Le Banquet

"Alors si l'union se trouvait avoir lieu entre l'homme et la femme, des enfants en étaient le fruit, et, si le mâle venait à s'unir au mâle, la satiété les séparait bientôt, et les renvoyait à leurs travaux et aux autres soins de la vie. De là vient l'amour que nous avons naturellement les uns pour les autres : il nous ramène à notre nature primitive, il fait tout pour réunir les deux moitiés et pour nous rétablir dans notre ancienne perfection. Chacun de nous n'est donc qu'une moitié d'homme qui a été séparée de son tout de la même manière qu'on coupe une sole en deux [...]. De même, les hommes qui proviennent de la séparation des hommes primitifs recherchent le sexe masculin. Tant qu'ils sont jeunes, ils aiment les hommes : ils se plaisent à coucher avec eux et à être dans leurs bras : ils sont les premiers parmi les adolescents et les adultes, comme étant d'une nature beaucoup plus mâle."

"And after the transposition the male generated in the female in order that by the mutual embraces of man and woman they might breed, and the race might continue; or if man came to man they might be satisfied, and rest, and go their ways to the business of life: so ancient is the desire of one another which is implanted in us, reuniting our original nature, making one of two, and healing the state of man. Each of us when separated, having one side only, like a flat fish, is but the indenture of a man, and he is always looking for his other half [...]. But they who are a section of the male follow the male, and while they are young, being slices of the original man, they hang about men and embrace them, and they are themselves the best of boys and youths, because they have the most manly nature."
